Osweiler 2nd FHS grad to reach the Super Bowl

Flathead High School has sent five players to the NFL, and Brock Osweiler will be the second one to be on a team that has reached the Super Bowl.
Osweiler, a backup quarterback to Peyton Manning for Denver, will be on the sidelines today when the Broncos face the Seattle Seahawks.
Osweiler was a Gatorade Player of the Year his final year at Flathead. He played his college football at Arizona State, leaving after his junior season. The 6-foot-8, 240-pound QB was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by Denver in 2012. He was the 57th player selected overall.
To celebrate Osweiler, Flathead High School signed a banner bearing his photos as a Brave and a Bronco that read, “Capturing the Flathead Spirit! Good Luck in Super Bowl XLVIII.” The school sent a picture of the banner to Osweiler this week as he prepared for today’s game.
The first Flathead player to compete in a Super Bowl was an early star for Osweiler’s opponent in the big game.
Sam McCullum, a 1970 graduate who led the Braves to a state basketball title his senior season, played special teams for the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX. In his rookie season out of Montana State, McCallum returned three punts for 11 yards and a kickoff for 26 yards, the longest return of the game, in the Vikings’ 16-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
McCullum would later go on to star for the expansion Seahawks in their first few seasons. He scored the first two touchdowns in Seattle franchise history on 15- and 72-yard passes from Jim Zorn in a 30-24 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sept. 12, 1976. McCullum is the NFL’s all-time leader in receiving touchdowns by a Montana high school graduate, hauling in 26 touchdowns and 274 catches for 4,017 yards in a 10-year career.
Montanans have been sprinkled throughout Super Bowl history, from the first game to the most recent.
Rick Dennison, son of former University of Montana president George Dennison, was born in Kalispell before moving to Fort Collins, Colo. for high school. He went on to play inside linebacker for the Broncos in Super Bowls XXI, XXII and XXIV. Dennison is now the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens.
Jerry Kramer, who was born in Jordan but graduated from high school in Sandpoint, Idaho, was the first Montana-born player to win a Super Bowl, fittingly doing so in Super Bowl I and II for the Green Bay Packers. Kramer played right guard on the first two Super Bowl champions.
Helena’s Pat Donovan started at right tackle for the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XII, helping clear the way for 143 rushing yards and a Tony Dorsett touchdown in a win over the Denver Broncos. He was also on the Cowboys for losses in Super Bowls X and XIII.
Bozeman’s Dane Fletcher was the most recent Montanan to play in the Super Bowl, recording one tackle for the New England Patriots in their Super Bowl XLVI loss to the New York Giants in 2012.
Butte’s Pat Ogrin was on the Washington Redskins, who won Super Bowl XVII.
Fort Peck’s Wayne Hawkins had a kick return for three yards as a guard for the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II.
Helena’s Blaine McElmurry played in just one game for Green Bay in 1997, but suited up for the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.
