Second-half superheroes

COEUR d'ALENE - With 5A Lake City High having won five straight games coming into Friday's nonleague boys basketball battle with Lakeland and the 4A Hawks having won three straight, something had to give.
In the third quarter, after the score was tied at 18 at halftime, boy did it ever.
The host Timberwolves (12-4) drilled four 3-pointers - three by 6-foot-3 senior wing JJ Winger - and shot ahead in a 26-5 run to take a 44-23 lead, on their way to a 58-30 rout of the Hawks (9-6), who were coming off a 76-63 win Tuesday at home over 5A and third-ranked Coeur d'Alene.
Lake City shot 24 for 41 from the field and 10 for 13 in the huge third quarter outburst.
On "Superhero Night" at Lake City High, with several students and cheerleaders wearing shirts with the Superman logo and various other comic book hero logos on them, Winger was among the heroes on the court, scoring 15 points, including nine on three 3-pointers in the third-quarter outburst.
"During that zone (defense), we couldn't figure it out in the first half," Winger said. "We hit a few in the second half, they had to get out of it (the zone). In the second half, that was more our style. In the first half, they wanted to slow it down and make us take bad shots."
Lakeland's top sharpshooter, 6-foot junior guard Tyrel Derrick, scored 18 points but just five of them were in the second half. Derrick started out on fire, hitting his first three shots of the game in the first quarter, and finished 6 for 11 from the field.
The Timberwolves held him to just one shot attempt in the key third quarter run.
"We played man defense the whole game," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. "He (Derrick) is a talented kid. We tried to switch (defenders) off on him and not let him penetrate all the way. I think our kids played him just the way we wanted to play him. Defensively, we did pretty well."
Kyle Guice, who had 11 points, six rebounds and three of the Timberwolves' five blocks, kickstarted the huge spurt with a lay-in for a 20-18 lead Lake City never relinquished.
The first 3 in the third quarter by Winger extended the lead to 25-20, Guice hit another 3 to push it to 33-20 and the Timberwolves were off to the races.
"In the second half, the wheels fell of the bus," Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. "We didn't adjust to them very well. The ball quit falling in the second half and that's the game right there. Their size became a factor in the second half. But we learned from this. Hopefully we can get a little better. In the long run, this game doesn't mean anything to us. This doesn't affect our league at all, or district. I'm just disappointed we didn't give them a better game. We're more than capable of doing that."
Stockwell said Guice moving down among the blocks was among the keys for Lake City.
"They shot the ball very well," Stockwell said. "Offensively, they put Guice at the bottom and he hit some shots. When he hits his shots, we have no one who can match up with him, try as we may."
Lakeland started the game on a 7-2 run and took an 11-5 lead in the first quarter. The Hawks opened up with several drives to penetrate the Timberwolves' defense and Jake Ram, Hayden Nosworthy and Derrick took it right at Lake City.
The Timberwolves responded in the second quarter, embarking on a 13-0 run to stake an 18-11 lead, thanks in part to dribble drives inside by Tucker Louie-McGee and Jared Turner, before Lakeland counterpunched with a 7-0 run in the final 2:37 of the first half, on an outside jumper and four free throws by Derrick.
Lake City's bench came up big, outscoring the Hawks 28-4, with Turner leading the way with eight points.
"In the first half, the guys off our bench saved our bacon," Winger said. "In the second half we cut loose, played like we can normally play. With 40 points (in the second half), I'm extremely pleased."
On Tuesday, Lake City plays at Post Falls, and Lakeland is home against Moscow.
Lakeland 11 7 5 7 - 30
Lake City 15 3 26 14 - 58
LAKELAND - Derrick 18, Ram 2, Bayley 0, Nosworthy 2, Plunkett 4, Cooper 4, Ray 0, Henry 0.
LAKE CITY - Adams 2, Pratt 2, Vetsch 0, Guice 11, Winger 15, Louie-McGee 8, Dahl 2, Mitchell 6, Hancock 4, Turner 8.
