Moses Lake wrestling league champions

YAKIMA - Moses Lake wrestling is once again on top of the Columbia Basin Big 9.
With a dominant 70-6 win against Eisenhower Thursday, in which the Chiefs took 13/14 matches, the team secured a league championship.
"It was really rewarding to go out there and win that and that's one of our goals every year is to go out and win the league title," head coach Jaime Garza said. "Next we want to go out and win a district title and so that's the task at hand now. Accomplish one thing and now it's time to move to on another."
The Chiefs were dominant during the regular season, taking every dual match usually by a large margin of victory.
"It feels nice, deserving, it's something that we need," Garza said. "It's an improvement from what we did last year."
Moses Lake seems to be peaking at the right time as the team has posted back-to-back 70-point wins against Davis and the Cadets.
Several Chiefs secured falls against Eisenhower, including Chase Clasen (132 .lbs), Joel Torres (152 .lbs) and Hudson Mauseth (160 .lbs).
Garza was especially impressed with Torres' performance.
"Joel Torres went out there with quite a bit of intensity and did what we've been practicing," he said.
Nico Hernandez (170 .lbs), Easton Castro (182 .lbs) and Jordan Lacelle (195 .lbs) also recorded falls.
Heavyweight Justin Sainsbury (285 .lbs) and Jose Garcia (120 .lbs) also recorded pins. Cooper McCullough (106 .lbs) recorded a technical fall.
"To put up that many points and being able to go out there and pin the majority of our guys and not just win, but we won decisively," Garza said. "We won by large margins."
Moses Lake begins the postseason Feb. 8 at the District 4A Wrestling Tournament at Eisenhower.
Garza thinks that his team could have an advantage over the other out of area schools as the preparation and trip to Yakima will be fresh in the team's mind.
"We just keep on climbing and tonight we took another step forward I believe," he said.
