PLUMMER — Two Plummer-area children died on Sunday afternoon after falling through the ice into a pond.
The victims were identified today by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe as siblings Jose Reyes, 9, and Eleana Maravilla, 5.
At 4:30 p.m., Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police and emergency medical responders were dispatched to a pond on Old Agency Loop Road in Plummer where two children had fallen through the ice and were trapped in the pond, according to the tribe.
They were found by their grandmother, who called 911 and then pulled them out of the pond, according to the tribe.
The children were transported by ambulance Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene. The grandmother was also treated for hypothermia and released from the hospital.
Heather Keen, tribal spokeswoman, said it was reported that the kids were looking for their dog when they fell through the ice. She said this afternoon that it's unclear how long they were in the water. No one else was at the pond when they fell in, she said.
The children attended Lakeside Elementary in Plummer.
Autopsies on the bodies are expected to be performed today or tomorrow.
