PLUMMER - Two Plummer-area children died Sunday afternoon after falling through ice into a pond.

The victims were identified Monday by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe as siblings Jose Reyes, 9, and Eleana Maravilla, 5. The children attended Lakeside Elementary in Plummer.

Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police and emergency medical responders were dispatched to a pond on Old Agency Loop Road in Plummer at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The two kids had fallen through the ice and were trapped in the pond, according to the tribe.

"It was reported that they were looking for their dog when they fell through the ice," said Heather Keen, the tribe's spokeswoman.

They were found by their grandmother, who called 911 and pulled them out of the pond, Keen said.

The size of the pond fluctuates throughout the year, but authorities estimate the pond to be about 6 feet deep this time of year.

The children were transported by ambulance to Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, where they were pronounced dead. The grandmother was also treated and released from the hospital. Her name was not released on Monday.

Keen said it's unclear how long the kids were in the water. No one else was at the pond when they fell in, she said.

"Our hearts go out to the family of these young ones," said Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police Chief Cody SiJohn, whose officers responded to the scene. "When you deal with any emergency that involves children, you can't help but be affected by it. Today, our entire community is mourning the loss of these children whose lives were tragically cut short."

Services are pending.

In a letter to parents and guardians, the Plummer-Worley School District said its crisis response team took action to ensure students and staff have a supportive environment. A Benewah Medical Center counselor was also available. The website address of an article on how to help children cope with death was mentioned.

"You can be very proud of the good behavior of each and every student," the letter signed by Superintendent Judi Sharrett and Lakeside Elementary Principal Mike Crabtree states. "They remained calm and followed the directions they were given by adults."
