Recessions take a bite out of almost every sector of the economy, but perhaps none bigger than restaurants.

As the slowdown continues, local restaurants are feeling the pinch, said Bill Jhung, director of the Idaho Small Business Development Center in Post Falls. That's why the SBDC is offering a workshop called "Driving Restaurant Profits" from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. next Tuesday, Feb. 11. The workshop will take place at 525 W. Clearwater Loop in Post Falls.

"Dining out in a restaurant is part of the American culture," Jhung said. "The average American eats 4.2 meals a week in a restaurant setting. Unfortunately with the slowdown in the economy the net income of restaurants have declined steadily, making restaurants one of the most challenging businesses to run successfully."

The workshop will cover current statistics and trends, the results of a Cornell University study on "Why Restaurants Fail," financial modeling for restaurants and proven tips that increase profitability.

The workshop cost is $39 and will be taught by Mike Wells, a 25-year veteran of the hospitality and restaurant industry.
