All about hearts in February

February is Heart Health Month and the kickoff of the Go Red for Women campaign. Kootenai Health is offering Heart to Heart screenings every Tuesday and Friday this month for both men and women. Give yourself the gift of good health by knowing how you measure up. Call 666-2083 to schedule your 15-minute screening.

According to the American Heart Association heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, claiming more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. Listen to your heart my friends.

If ever there was a great reason for rival high schools to come together, Unite for the Fight on Saturday at Coeur d'Alene High School is it. Post Falls Trojan football coach Jeff Hinz and Coeur d'Alene Viking football coach Shawn Amos are each battling cancer and this event will raise funds to help with their medical expenses. During the Vikings vs Trojans freshman, JV and varsity basketball games, which start at noon, there will be raffles and barbecue pulled pork sandwiches.

Coach Hinz and Coach Amos are well-loved and have both communities cheering them on in their real life challenge. Let's fill that gym to the rafters!

Seeing colorful ice balls-orbs-spheres decorating local yards? It's the ice ball craze that's sweeping the town. I made a few dozen in early December but alas our above average and near 50 degree temperatures around the first of the year took a toll. But now that Mother Nature is bringing us arctic temps once again, get out the balloons and food coloring for a little cold weather fun.

About 10-12 drops of food coloring in a balloon that you fill with water at the kitchen faucet is all you need. Filling to cantaloupe-size is good. Place the water balloons outside (far enough apart that the sides don't touch) and let freeze for at least 24 hours. Then peel off the balloon and voila` ... colorful pops of color in our winter white landscape!

Rest up for the weekend, which will feature a plethora of events. Friday is the annual Coeur d'Alene Downtown Association's "A Chocolate Affair." Start the adventure at the Plaza Shoppes at 5 p.m. On Saturday is the Post Falls Community Volunteers' Annual Sweetheart Ball at the Greyhound Park, featuring music by Tuxedo Junction. On Sunday a Spaghetti Feed at The Coeur d'Alene Resort will benefit a capital campaign for Children's Village. Tuesday, Feb. 11, go to the dogs with the 10th annual Best in Show at Crickets. A fun night from 5-8 p.m. with themed food and beverages, that includes raffles and viewing of the 138th Westminster Dog Show. Proceeds benefit the Kootenai Humane Society.

Happy birthday today to Leslie Deubner, Sharon Anderson, Vicki Johnson and Jeanette Dunn. Tomorrow Randy Oaks, Rich Morrow, Carole Fredekind, Chris Burnham, Rick Altman, Pat Clevenger, Stephen Scott, Jimmy McAndrew, Lisa Hunt, Duane Justus, Matt Ormeshed and Mike Grabenstein put on their party hats. On Friday Amanda Miller, Lori Malin, Angel Duthie, Terry Ellis and Shawn Aldrich will blow out their birthday candles. Barb Bradley, Natalie Forsyth, Pamela Thoms, Lynn Hayes, Linda Davis, Henry Hildreth, Rocky Brockhoff and Larry O'Leary celebrate another trip around the sun on Saturday. Feb. 9 birthdays belong to Linda Wilhelm, Brandie Shofner, Buddy Le, Marian Crumb, Greg Smith, Bill Buley, Julia Free and Alta Steele. Kiki Miller and Tate Merry share Feb. 10 birthdays. On Tuesday wish Carole Tabakman, Trevor Smith, Eleanora Capaul, David Clark, James Shepperd, Jarryn Siebers, Jeff Carlson, Sharon Link, Gordon Leigh, Jody Hissong, Chad Salsbury and Heather Frayer a happy birthday.
