COEUR d’ALENE — It was an icy Tuesday night for county law enforcement personnel as they searched for a couple stranded in their vehicle on a logging road in the outskirts of town.

The temperature was in single digits when the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman who reported that she and her boyfriend were stuck in the Blue Creek area.

Based on their GPS location, Tammy Hurt, 51, of Coeur d'Alene, and John Paremsky, 46, also of Coeur d'Alene, were in the area of East Borley Road and a tow truck was sent to pick the couple up. According to a sheriff's office press release, the couple's vehicle became stuck in the snow when they attempted to turn around because of the road conditions.

However, the tow truck was unable to locate the couple and their cell phones were going directly to voice mail. Law enforcement then proceeded to send back country deputies and a search and rescue team to locate the vehicle.

A Spokane County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was also sent to the area and was able to locate the vehicle off a logging road between Timothy and Chelsea Lane at approximately 1:00 a.m.

“They were in good health,” Lt. Stu Miller said.

Rendezvousing with the past

A rugged group of individuals with a thirst for adventure and fortune made their way west after the Lewis and Clark Expedition – after some time in the wilderness they would rendezvous in places like St. Louis to trade fur and goods as well as engage in friendly competition. Stories of daring and close escapes from Indians were swapped around a campfire by people like John Colter, who ran hundreds of miles in nothing but his Birthday suit to get safely back to civilization.

Defense Wins Championships

The old adage of “defense wins championships” was alive and well in Superior this week, as the boys basketball team kept the defensive pressure on both Noxon and St. Regis to win two critical games capping off a 31-5 regular season.
