COEUR d'ALENE - A Coeur d'Alene man reported the theft and fraudulent use of one of his checks to the police department on Monday.
According to a Coeur d'Alene Police Department report, the man said he discovered a check for $850 had been cashed at the Potlatch Credit Union branch located inside the Hayden Walmart. He told police he knew he had not written a check for that amount, and when he looked at his checkbook, the checks with check numbers before and after the stolen one were intact.
When the man spoke with an employee of the credit union, they told him that they have a video of a male cashing the check, which was made payable to cash and had a forged signature on it. The suspect used the money from the stolen check to open an account at the bank.
Law enforcement contacted the credit union and, according to the report, detectives are in the process of obtaining security footage from the incident.
