SOLDOTNA, AK. - The Wenatchee Wild had an impressive weekend taking all three road games against Kenai River.
The Wild held on to defeat Kenai River in a shootout the first two games before completing the sweep with a narrow 2-1 victory.
"I was very proud of the effort, there were a lot of kids who were nicked up and banged up, played through some injuries, all the way around, it was a good effort," head coach Bliss Littler said. "We definitely took a step forward this weekend. We'll enjoy this today and tomorrow, have a travel day Monday, then start thinking about getting ready for Fairbanks."
The sweep improved Wenatchee to 22-17-5 overall.
In the series opener, the Wild were able to score in the final minute to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime. Andre Pison found the back of the net off an assist from Christian Salvato.
Chase Perry stopped all four Kenai River attempts in the shootout and Wenatchee escaped with a 4-3 win.
Once again, it took a shootout to decide the victor of game two.
Wenatchee took a 3-1 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Brown Bears were able to tie the game and force overtime.
Perry stopped a Kenai River shot in round five of the shootout to give Wenatchee its second straight 4-3 win.
"Our first period was good," Littler said. "But in the end, it wasn't one of our better periods. We got a little better in the second; I thought we played extremely well in the third until the last minute and a half."
Troy Loggins scored twice and the Wild were able to complete the sweep with a 2-1 win Saturday against the Brown Bears.
Wenatchee travels to Fairbanks for three games Feb. 6, 7 and 8.
