COEUR d'ALENE - A Coeur d'Alene couple's drive through the woods Tuesday night turned into an icy search and rescue effort.

The temperature was in single digits when the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office received a call from Tammy Hurt, 51, who reported that she and John Paremsky, 46, were stuck on a logging road near the Blue Creek area.

According to Hurt and Paremsky, the two went for a drive down the logging road in approximately 2 feet of snow. When they attempted to turn the vehicle around because of the road conditions, they went over a slight embankment.

When the two called 911, police dispatchers were able to trace their phone call to the area of East Borley Road and deputies were sent to find the couple.

However, law enforcement officers were unable to locate the pair and their cell phones were going directly to voicemail. At 10 p.m., the sheriff's office sent out backcountry deputies and a search and rescue team to locate the vehicle.

A Spokane County Sheriff's Office helicopter was also sent to the area and used data provided by Hurt's cell phone carrier to locate a vehicle near the area where the 911 call was made. The helicopter guided searchers, who were able to locate the couple at 1 a.m. on a logging road between Timothy and Chelsea Lane.

"They were in good health," Lt. Stu Miller said.

According to Sgt. Ryan Higgins, it is unknown why Hurt and Paremsky did not walk out to the road or to the homes less than a quarter of a mile away.

"With the temperatures forecasted to be well below freezing over the next several days, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to be prepared when they venture out into the woods," Higgins wrote in a press release. "Everyone should have warm clothing, extra food and water, fully charged cell phones and most important, always let someone know where you are going and when you plan on returning."
