Chiefs eye district title
CONNOR VANDERWEYST | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
MOSES LAKE - After the long grind of the regular season, Moses Lake wrestling has finally reached the point the team has been lucky forward to the most - the postseason.
The first step is the District 4A Wrestling Tournament at Eisenhower Feb. 8. Moses Lake was able to dominate its competition and take home a district title last season after scoring 387 points.
According to Washington Wrestling Report, the Chiefs are ranked third in state behind Lake Stevens and Mead. However only three points separate Moses Lake from being the top ranked school in 4A.
The team has 14 wrestlers ranked in the top 12 of their respective weight classes, including two No. 1 ranked wrestlers. Sophomore Cooper McCullough (106 .lbs) and senior Fernando Leyva (113 .lbs) are ranked first overall. Freshman Jesus Cornejo and junior Trey Long are also both ranked sixth at 106 pounds and 113 pounds, respectively.
Moses Lake has scored big wins this season over Lake Stevens, Othello and Sunnyside, but head coach Jaime Garza knows that the ultimate prize lies in Tacoma at the end of the month.
The district tournament is scheduled to begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
