NIC BASKETBALL: Mokrzycki paces Cardinal women; NIC men upset

RANGELY, Colo. - Sophomore Renae Mokrzycki had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the North Idaho College women's basketball team past Colorado Northwestern 74-55 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game on Thursday night.

Georgia Stirton and Caitlyn Behymer had 13 points apiece, Kara Staggs 12 for NIC (19-7, 5-6 SWAC).

"We really came out aggressive on defense and I thought Renae did a good job," NIC coach Chris Carlson said. "Caitlin did a great job posting up on the block and playing well down there. Georgia had some nice drives in the second half and got loose."

Kayla Strobel scored 18 points for Colorado Northwestern (5-19, 0-11).

In other SWAC play, 10th-ranked Southern Idaho (23-3, 9-2) held off Utah State-Eastern (11-14, 5-6) 95-88 in Price, Utah - pulling NIC into a third-place tie in the SWAC with Utah State-Eastern heading into Saturday's showdown at Price.

RANGELY, Colo. - Chris Spotser scored on a jumper with under five seconds remaining to lift the Spartans past the Cardinals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game.

Braxton Tucker gave NIC a 63-62 lead with 12.6 remaining.

"Braxton got a good look and was able to give us the lead," NIC assistant coach Thane Jackson said. "We drew up a zone and they were expecting man and he (Spotser) drove into four or five guys and threw up a shot and got it to go."

It was NIC's second loss in three years at Colorado Northwestern. Before that, the Cardinals hadn't lost in Rangely since 1998.

Shikei Blake had 15 points and five rebounds and Tatafu Nuku had 10 rebounds for NIC (17-9, 4-7 SWAC).

Leonard Hurst scored 16 points for Colorado Northwestern (8-17, 2-9).

In other SWAC play on Thursday, No. 2 Southern Idaho (24-2, 10-1) slipped past Utah State-Eastern (18-7, 5-6) 77-75 in Price, Utah. NIC travels to Utah State-Eastern on Saturday.
