NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men, women knock off USU-Eastern

* WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

PRICE, Utah - Freshman Panisessi Taimani had 25 points and 19 rebounds to lead the North Idaho College women's basketball team past the host Utah State-Eastern Golden Eagles 86-73 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

"She just had a monster game," said NIC coach Chris Carlson of Taimani, who made 11 of 13 attempts.

Renae Mokrzycki had 24 points and eight rebounds and Georgia Stirton had eight points, nine rebounds and 12 assists for NIC (20-7, 6-6 SWAC), which hosts Salt Lake on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

"I thought Georgia was really solid tonight," Carlson said. "She had a terrific game and our high/low game really hurt them. It was a great win and we're ready to get back home."

NIC outrebounded Utah State-Eastern 58-52.

NIC had lost its previous two games against Utah State-Eastern by a combined 10 points.

Maddy Murphy scored 14 points for Utah State-Eastern (11-15, 5-7).

In other SWAC play, Snow (11-13, 4-7) beat sixth-ranked Salt Lake (21-5, 10-1) 56-46 in Ephraim, Utah, and 10th-ranked Southern Idaho (24-3, 10-2) whipped Colorado Northwestern (5-20, 0-12) 97-48 in Rangely, Colo.

PRICE, Utah - Shikei Blake had 17 points and nine rebounds in 12 minutes as the Cardinals held off the Golden Eagles in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

"Shikei played really well for us," NIC coach Jared Phay said. "We pressed them a little bit and just defended really well and I think it kept them out of their rhythm."

Jordon King scored 13 points, Braxton Tucker 11 for NIC (18-9, 5-7 SWAC), which moves into third place in the conference with three games remaining.

NIC hosts Salt Lake on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

"I think our guys figured it out a little bit about how hard they need to play in this conference," Phay said. "And they did it for 40 minutes tonight."

Trahmier Burrell scored 13 points for Utah State-Eastern (18-8, 5-7), which has lost two straight to NIC since beating the Cardinals to open conference play on Dec. 12.

In other SWAC play, second-ranked Southern Idaho (25-2, 11-1) beat Colorado Northwestern (8-18, 2-10) 68-56 in Rangely and Snow (13-12, 4-7) topped 20th-ranked Salt Lake (21-5, 8-3) 70-63 in Ephraim, Utah.

ST. GEORGE, Utah - One day after sweeping Salt Lake Community College, the Cardinals dropped a pair of games to the 16th-ranked Bruins in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.

In the first game, Hayden Fields, Allison Paladeni, Kylene Hatton and Miranda Powless each homered for NIC, with Hatton and Powless driving in two runs apiece.

NIC trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game before Paladini and Hatton had RBI singles to pull the Cardinals within 4-3.

Powless hit a solo home run in the second game for NIC (6-5, 2-2 SWAC), which faces Southern Nevada next Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas.
