Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 11 months AGO
TROY - Kerstin Auer had 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead the No. 2 seed St. Maries Lumberjacks past the No. 3 seed Coeur d'Alene Charter Panthers 45-31 in the opening round of the 2A District 1-2 tournament on Saturday afternoon at Troy High.
St. Maries (10-8) will face top-seeded Grangeville (16-4) in a semifinal game on Monday at 6 p.m. at Troy, followed by the loser-out game between Coeur d'Alene Charter (8-12) and fourth-seeded Orofino (0-19) at 7:30.
Grangeville beat Orofino 65-15 in Saturday's other opening round game.
"I thought our girls handled Coeur d'Alene Charter's pressure defense pretty well today," St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. "We did a good job of keeping them off the offensive boards, holding them to six in the game."
Kelsey Auer had 11 points and 11 rebounds, Kendall Brusseau six rebounds and Chelsea Thaut four steals and three blocks for St. Maries.
Mae Alexander had 14 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter, which finished the game 3 for 23 from the free throw line.
"She had a good game," Sines said of Alexander. "Our defense was a little sluggish in reacting to her driving to the basket. They got within six, but our girls held their composure and finished strong."
"We had our chances to steal one tonight, but didn't shoot it very well from the free throw line," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Doug Grant said. "We just let one slip away from the line."
