COEUR d'ALENE - The last name is well known in Coeur d'Alene High athletic circles.

And for Sara Chalich - that spotlight is starting to shine in her direction in her senior year.

Chalich scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers, as the top-seeded Vikings pulled away in the second half to beat the fourth-seeded Post Falls Trojans 59-28 in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 girls basketball tournament Friday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

"There's a little pressure," Chalich said. "It's definitely a competition. The Chalich family has some athleticism running through their veins. With my brother (Chad) being the quarterback at Idaho, and my dad (Mark) played ball and everyone else in my family played ball, it's just time for me to make a name for myself."

Chalich hit a 3-pointer with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter to put the Vikings ahead 32-22. Coeur d'Alene finished the game on a 27-6 run.

"She does a good job for us," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "If she can score, and stay within the realm of what she's designed to do, she does a really nice job. She's a solid kid and really been making up for lost time."

Coeur d'Alene (19-2) will face No. 2 seed Lewiston (19-2) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the regional championship game.

Lewiston beat third-seeded and visiting Lake City 67-40 in the other opening round game on Friday.

Post Falls (10-11) travels to Lake City (10-11) in a loser-out game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Kim Reynolds scored seven points and Shayna Allert scored four of her six points in the first quarter for Post Falls, which finished the game 7 of 17 from the free-throw line.

"The kids really came out ready to play in the first half," Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "We did a good job and got some stuff going offensively and defensively."

During the regular season, Lewiston, ranked third in 5A in Idaho, won at Coeur d'Alene 49-46 in overtime, and Coeur d'Alene, ranked No. 2, won at Lewiston 47-27.

"It's going to be a good game," Poffenroth said. "We beat them down there because I don't think they were quite ready for us. Our kids went down there with the attitude it was about time we won there. Each one of us have won on the other's home court, but this one's for all the marbles. It should be a lot of fun."

Sydney Williams had 14 points, three blocks and two steals and Brittany Tackett added 12 points, all in the second half, for Coeur d'Alene.

"We had a few players that got into foul trouble," Poffenroth said. "We had some fouls that were just ridiculous. Not that they weren't fouls, but it was just something that the kids should have never done."

Post Falls trailed just 26-20 at halftime, but only had two field goals in the second half.

"We just came out and decided to crank it up and not go through the motions," Poffenroth said. "There are some drills that we run that we wouldn't run if we were a zone team. I told them at halftime that if you do it right in the second half, you won't get beat. And they did and it worked out fine, but you can't get lazy. Man defense takes a lot of work, and it takes a lot of monotonous drills, but if you can do them, and do them right, you can see what happens."

"I told them at halftime that Coeur d'Alene is probably getting their butt chewed," Allert said. "Because they didn't play well in the first half and we're going to have to match their intensity in the second half or it's going to get ugly. Hopefully we've learned that lesson that you've got to play 32 minutes in this league. You've got to play at a high intensity level, or you're going to get beat."
