EVERETT, Wash. - Joshua Winquist scored late in the second period and early in the third to break a 1-all tie and propel the Everett Silvertips past the Spokane Chiefs 3-2 in Western Hockey League play Sunday before 3,912 at Comcast Arena.

Marcus Messier scored at 13:51 of the third period to pull Spokane within a goal, but the Chiefs were unable to tie in the closing minutes, despite a power play and pulling their goaltender.

Riley Whittingham of Spokane tipped in a goal at 8:31 of the second period to tie the game at 1.

It was Spokane's second loss to Everett in the last nine days, after starting the year 6-0 vs. the Silvertips.

Spokane is now six points back of Seattle for second place in the U.S. Division.

The Chiefs play eight of their next nine games at home, starting Wednesday at the Spokane Arena against the Kelowna Rockets, ranked No. 1 in the CHL.
