COEUR d'ALENE - The Timberlake Tigers don't mind seeing the other team play a zone defense against them.

Especially the way the No. 2 seed Tigers shot the ball on Monday.

Timberlake hit six 3-pointers in the first half, seven for the game, and thumped the No. 3 seed Kellogg Wildcats 57-35 in the first round of the 3A District 1 girls basketball tournament at North Idaho College's Rolly Williams Court.

"We shot the ball well coming out of the gate, and that kind of extended their defense," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "And we got some easy baskets (in the second half) when they had to extend a little more."

Timberlake (14-7) will play No. 1 seed Priest River (14-7) in the district title game Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at NIC. Priest River defeated No. 4 seed Bonners Ferry 53-27 in the second game Monday.

Kellogg (12-8) will play Bonners Ferry (3-15) in a loser-out game Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at NIC.

Timberlake 57, Kellogg 35: Tigers freshman Allison Kirby scored the first eight points of the game, including back-to-back 3-pointers over the Kellogg zone in the first 70 seconds of the game.

Timberlake hit 4 of 7 3-pointers in the first quarter, 6 of 12 for the half. Kellogg went man in the second half, and the Tigers finished 7 of 17 from 3-point range for the game.

Timberlake, which split its two meetings with Kellogg during Intermountain League play, jumped out to a 12-2 lead. The Tigers led 17-8 at the quarter, 29-18 at the half, then pulled away in the third quarter.

"I thought Timberlake shot the ball really well - kudos to them," Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said. "They pulled us out of it (the zone) in the third quarter - we didn't have much choice. It's hard to dig yourself a hole like that. And they had two 17-point quarters (in the first and third quarters). Obviously we have to play better defense than that."

Keelie Lawler, another freshman, led everyone with 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and was 9 of 14 from the free-throw line. Kirby, the point guard, finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Timberlake forced Kellogg into 20 turnovers. The Tigers had 18.

"I thought we turned them over pretty well; I was happy with the way we played on defense," Miller said.

Senior post Kelsey Carter had seven points and nine rebounds for Kellogg. Senior point guard McKenna Stewart, slowed by foul trouble, also scored seven for the Wildcats.

Timberlake split with Priest River during IML play, losing 44-38 at home and winning 43-41 at Priest River.

"For us, (the key) is rebounding; they're so much bigger than we are," Miller said. "We have to slow their bigs down, and keep (Jill) Weimer and (Katlyn) Summers off the offensive boards."

Priest River 53, Bonners Ferry 27: Senior Karly Douglas and junior Katlyn Summers scored 15 points each for the Spartans, and senior Jill Weimer added 14.

Abby Davis and Desi Minor had seven points each for Bonners.

Monday's games at Troy High were snowed out, and rescheduled for Wednesday. No. 2 seed St. Maries (10-8) will face No. 1 Grangeville (16-4) at 6 p.m. in a semifinal, followed by No. 3 Coeur d'Alene Charter (8-12) vs. No. 4 Orofino (0-19) at 7:30 in a loser-out game.

* 1A DIVISION I DISTRICT 1 TOURNAMENT

Monday's first game of the best-of-3 playoff between Lakeside (9-11) and Wallace (14-4) was postponed to tonight at 7:30. A site hadn't been determined Monday night, but talk was it possibly could be at Kellogg.
