COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene police arrested a Rathdrum man on the North Idaho College campus Monday for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Before classes began in the morning, a witness contacted college administrators and told them he thought Michael Rustin Dan, 34, would come to class with a gun. Police were contacted and were able to take Dan into custody at the Hedlund Building without incident.

According to a Coeur d'Alene Police Department press release, the witness observed Dan with a holstered revolver underneath his coat in class on Thursday. The man told law enforcement he hung out with Dan later that night and said Dan was upset because of relationship problems, and allegedly said that he wasn't afraid to die.

Dan reportedly purchased 75 hollow-point rounds for the gun and the witness was concerned Dan was going to harm himself.

Police also found paraphernalia commonly used for methamphetamine when they searched Dan. The man allegedly admitted to police that he uses the drug and, according to the press release, officers believed he was under the influence at the time of his arrest.

Law enforcement officers transported Dan to the Kootenai County jail, where he later posted $600 bail for both misdemeanor offenses.

According to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository, Dan has been previously charged with disturbing the peace, domestic battery and driving under the influence.
