A male driver who allegedly led law enforcement on a chase on Interstate 90 in Idaho on Tuesday night died during a deputy-involved shooting in Spokane Valley, according to police.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man as 23-year-old Jedadiah Zillmer, a veteran and 2008 graduate of Lewis and Clark High in Spokane. He was attending Spokane Falls Community College.

The medical examiner said Zillmer died of multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was homicide.

Law enforcement officials said Zillmer earned a Purple Heart after he was shot in the foot in Afghanistan in 2011. On his Facebook page, Zillmer indicated he was a former Army sniper.

Just after 7 p.m on Tuesday, the Spokane County 911 center received a call from a male indicating he was suicidal, had weapons and wanted law enforcement to kill him, according to the multi-agency Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR).

Zillmer indicated he was traveling on the freeway in Spokane Valley.

"The male continued contact with 911 dispatch as he traveled eastbound," a SIRR press release states.

Zillmer reported he stopped at the Zip's parking lot on the west side of Post Falls, according to police.

North Idaho law enforcement agencies located him in a red Honda Civic with Washington plates between Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene.

Zillmer exited the freeway at Sherman Avenue in Coeur d'Alene and headed west back toward Spokane.

After law enforcement attempted to pull Zillmer over, a pursuit that reached 100 mph ensued into Spokane Valley.

The chase involved multiple Idaho and Washington law enforcement agencies.

Police prepared to set up spike strips on the freeway in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but were unable to do so due to unsafe road conditions, Post Falls police Chief Scot Haug said.

Spokane Valley deputies took over the pursuit at the state line.

Zillmer exited the freeway at Sullivan and stopped at the intersection at Indiana and Sullivan near the Spokane Valley Mall. A short time later, deputies advised that shots had been fired and requested medics respond to the scene. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zillmer was armed, threatened to shoot civilians and pulled a gun moments before he was shot, according to police reports.

The incident started as a domestic violence case in Spokane County and Zillmer reported having post-traumatic stress disorder, according to police reports.

“This was very tragic for his family and the officers that took action,” Haug said. “We’re seeing an increase in people who are desperate and crying out for help. It challenges our resources and the mental health community on how to best deal with these cases.”

The Spokane County Bomb Squad was called to the scene as it was reported Zillmer had an explosive device, according to police reports.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this incident or has additional information to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

The Officer-Involved Fatal Incident Protocol was enacted.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office later will release the names of the deputies involved.

Once the SIRR completes the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

No further information was released from law enforcement.
