COEUR d'ALENE - The Lake City Timberwolves did just enough to keep their season alive on Tuesday night.

The Post Falls Trojans came very, very close to doing the same.

Dakota Wilson made the second of a pair of free throws with 1:33 remaining to boost the Timberwolves' lead to 46-43, which they held onto due to four missed shots by the Trojans in the waning moments in a 5A Region 1 girls basketball tournament loser-out game at Lake City High.

"When it comes down to a loser-out game, it really comes down to whoever wants to play," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "I give credit to Post Falls. They got after us tonight, but our girls responded. That game could have gone either way down the stretch. (Post Falls coach) Marc (Allert) does a great job with those girls."

Lake City (11-11) advances to the second-place game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the loser of tonight's championship game between Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene. Saturday's winner advances to state.

"We're just thankful for the opportunity to get another shot at either of those teams," Kelly said. "I told the girls it comes down a one-game season to get to the state tournament.

We're excited and haven't been in this position in a few years. A win is a win, but I give credit to Marc and Post Falls. They played their guts out and are a very good team."

Post Falls (10-12) pulled within a two-point deficit twice in the fourth quarter, the second time on a layup by Hannah Bodman with 2:08 remaining to make it 45-43.

It was the final points of the game for Post Falls.

"We had our chances, and the kids are upset that they missed some shots," Allert said. "But we wouldn't have been in the game if they hadn't made some shots earlier in the game. But it didn't come down to the final shots in that game."

Post Falls, with pretty much a brand-new team this year after winning the state 5A title last year, will graduate two seniors off this year's team.

"We've got a lot of kids coming back," Allert said. "I think we may have underachieved a little bit this year, and that's on me to do the job I should have done. It's the end of this season, but the start of next season and we're going to make some changes and do things a little different and attack things next year."

Madi Farrell had 10 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots, Natalie Wheelock 10 points and three assists and Olivia Maryon five points - all in the fourth quarter - for Lake City. Wheelock had six of her 10 at the start of the third quarter.

"Olivia had five points when it was a crucial part of the game," Kelly said. "Natalie did a good job coming out of the half. I told them at halftime we were settling for those long jump shots in the first half. When we get to the basket and attack, that's where we get things going. That was the biggest key for us, not settling for jump shots and attacking the rim and getting closer to the basket."

Shayna Allert scored 10 points and Sam Runkle had six points and six rebounds for Post Falls.

Post Falls 17 8 9 9 - 43

Lake City 13 15 10 8 - 46

POST FALLS - Allert 10, O. Ellison 5, A. Ellison 2, King 0, L. Smith 3, Bodman 7, Runkle 6, Kyle 2, Reynolds 8, Anderson 0.

LAKE CITY - Jackson 11, Dvorak 4, Wilson 1, Wheelock 10, Wendlandt 0, Smith 1, Maryon 5, Farrell 10, Meier 4.
