ROYAL CITY - This week, Feb. 9 - 15, is Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) week. It is a week to campaign and get the word out about FCCLA.

According to FCCLA teacher Paula Perryman, the Family and Consumer Science classroom and FCCLA have done many things to advance Royal High School students' knowledge of Careers in Family and Consumer Science.

The Foods classrooms exhibited their skill by having each student make a batch of cookies to share with students and staff. They earned the moniker "cookie fairy" for delivering trays of cookies to the RHS Staff lounge during the final days of the first semester.

Students in the clothing and textiles classroom completed several projects showing their skills. These included stuffed animals, pillows, duffle bags and aprons. Students also completed a cross stitch kit and created tie blankets.

In the Family Health Classroom 41 students received 1st level certification in adult CPR. Students were expected to show proficiency by rescuing a CPR mannequin.

"We expect to certify as many as 80 students before the end of the school year," Perryman said.

During October FCCLA participated in a Carmel Apple Fundraiser with the proceeds slated to go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Students donated their time and supplies and sold 50 caramel apples. "We sold all the supplies that we made so next year we hope to sell and donate even more," Perryman said.

During FCCLA week and Valentine's Day, students will be selling heart shaped cookie grams. They will donate all their time and materials to make heart shaped sugar cookies for those who purchase them in school to be delivered to the person of their choice.

Students who order will receive cookie deliveries on Thursday, Feb. 13. Proceeds from the sales of these cookies will be used to purchase stuffed animals to be delivered to children at local hospitals and clinics.
