SANDPOINT - An interstate manhunt was underway Wednesday for a prisoner who escaped from the Pend Oreille County Jail in Newport.

Pend Oreille County sheriff's officials said Ryan Andrew Apling managed to escape from a recreation yard by scaling several razor-wire topped fences. Blood found in the snow indicated that Apling was injured while making his escape.

Apling, 29, was being held at the jail for failing to appear on criminal charges of second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree driving with a suspended license.

Apling is 5-foot-10 and 140 pounds. He has blue eyes and short blond hair. Apling was originally wearing orange jail-issued garb, but changed his clothing after his escape and was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The top of his inmate uniform was found outside the fencing encircling the jail.

The escape occurred at 3:29 p.m. and led to the lockdown of the nearby Stratton Elementary School in Newport. It was not immediately clear if Idaho Hill Elementary in Oldtown was also placed on lockdown.

Deputies from Pend Oreille and Bonner counties fanned out to search for Apling with help from a K-9 unit from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Apling was tracked for several miles before his trail was lost, according to Pend Oreille County sheriff's officials.
