New bakery and cafe opens in downtown ML

MOSES LAKE - It's fitting that Moses Lake businesswoman Donna Jensen named her new downtown bakery and cafe Bumbleberry's.
Like a bumbleberry pie, which consists of different kinds of berries, Bumbleberry's consists of different kinds of businesses concepts.
It's an espresso shop, but it's also an eatery. There's cakes, cupcakes and other desserts, but there's also a wide selection of breakfast and lunch dishes.
Bumbleberry's is also a gift shop, with chocolates, candy and other items for last-minute birthday, Valentine's Day and Christmas presents.
And just like all the ingredients of a bumbleberry pie come together to make a decadent dessert, Jensen said she hopes all the components of Bumbleberry's come together to make a successful business.
Jensen established her previous cake-decorating business, Classy and Crazy Cakes, about three years ago. While she was extremely busy in the summer, she said business tended to slow down in the winter.
"I wanted to do something that would add more walk-in traffic and get more people in all the time," Jensen said. "Last year I expanded the building, we did cupcakes, a little bit of truffles and candy and gifts."
She said that helped with business, so she decided to replicate that on a bigger scale. She then acquired a downtown Moses Lake storefront, just a few steps from her previous one, and opened Bumbleberry's this past Monday.
Jensen said she wanted to bring a different kind of bakery concept to Moses Lake.
Jensen said comfort is key at Bumbleberry's- whether it's comfort food or a comfortable ambiance for customers.
"Everything we do focuses on comfort," she said. "We have homemade comfort food, we want to bring back some of those flavors that grandma used to make, and we have the lounge area for people to kick back and watch TV."
Bumbleberry's offers free wifi for customers, and there is also a desktop computer for those without a laptop.
On the food side, Bumbleberry's has a breakfast and lunch menu. Jensen said menu items will change every month or so.
"We want to give people the opportunity to try something new once in a while," she said.
The breakfast menu right now includes staples like pancakes, French toast and biscuits and gravy. They have a bumbleberry compote, which seems to be popular so far, said Jensen.
Lunch items include various soups, salads and sandwiches. All their bread is made fresh at the bakery, she said.
Some of Jensen's favorites on the lunch menu include the cafe's take on a BLT sandwich- made with mozzarella cheese, a pesto sauce and arugula instead of lettuce- and the French classic croque-monsieur sandwich.
But Jensen didn't abandon the sweets. Bumbleberry's has dozens of desserts to choose from.
"We kept the cakes and cupcakes like we had next door," she said. "But instead of eight to 10 flavors, we now have 24 cupcake flavors everyday."
Jensen said they will also have a few cakes available if customers need them, and of course she still does special orders.
With Bumbleberry's, Jensen said she wanted to do more than just cakes and cupcakes.
"We have fruit pies and cream pies, they're all made from scratch," she said. "Of course we have the bumbleberry pie since we are Bumbleberry's."
Jensen uses raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, apple and rhubarb in her bumbleberry pie recipe.
"We also have desserts from other cultures, like Baklava and a lot of French pastries like eclairs and cream puffs," she said. "There is also a lot of truffles and caramels and we do desserts people don't see often like homemade Twinkies."
Jensen said she's looking for ways for Bumbleberry's to be more than just a cafe. They set up a party room, which can hold about 50 people for meetings or small parties.
They can also host cupcake decorating parties, she said. Once a month, she's also hoping to host classes for people to learn decorating and baking techniques.
Jensen said she has other ideas for wine and chocolate tastings and poetry readings or other soft open-mic events.
Bumbleberry's is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 202 W. Third Ave.
