Progress, but issues remain

COEUR d'ALENE - The executive committee of H1 Unlimited, the hydroplane league that included the Diamond Cup races on Lake Coeur d'Alene last summer, said over the weekend that progress has been made by local race officials toward meeting demands lined out in a recent letter.

The committee released a statement to The Press saying that since the conclusion of the 2013 Diamond Cup the committee has been working with race organizers to fulfill the terms and conditions for last year's race. That, the committee said, would allow the two sides to proceed with planning for this summer's anticipated races.

"While progress has been made, there are issues which have not been completely resolved as of this date," Saturday's statement read. "We are reviewing the situation and hope to reach a positive solution soon."

Last week, The Press reported that H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole wrote to Diamond Cup organizers saying a Saturday, Feb. 15 deadline must be met. By that date, Cole demanded payment of money from last year's race, a $5,000 deposit for 2014, and a signed race agreement and contracted payment schedule for this year, with all funds paid in advance.

Cole wrote, "Written agreement and payment schedule for the $71,000 balance of the insufficient funds check that was given to H1 at the conclusion of the 2013 event" must be made right.

Cole threatened to cancel the 2014 Diamond Cup if the deadline wasn't met, though in an interview with The Press he also emphasized H1 really wants to keep Coeur d'Alene on its schedule of upcoming races.
