Warden captures district title, sends 17 to regionals
CONNOR VANDERWEYST | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
WARDEN - Warden boys wrestling took full advantage of playing host to the SCAC East District 4 Tournament by tallying 329 points and blowing out its competition.
The Cougars were able to crown four individual champions and qualified 17 wrestlers for the regional tournament at Zillah.
"Our kids wrestled really great this last districts," head coach Brent Cox said. "We scored a lot of points, but we got a lot of depth... To be honest with you we come through with a lot more than I kind of was expecting, so the kids wrestled really, really well."
Jesus Dominguez (106 .lbs), Raul Martinez (126 .lbs), Ramses Rodelo (132 .lbs) and Jerry Reyes (220 .lbs) were Warden's four district champions.
Cox would've liked to see more Cougars finish first to give Warden higher seeds in the upcoming regional tournament which features defending state champion Granger.
"You always want more champions, but that's okay," he said. "We got 17 through, hopefully that's a good number to take into regionals. We're going to be up against the defending state champions."
Despite only one loss on the season, to Granger, Warden is currently ranked eighth, according to the Washington Wrestling Report. Quincy, who Warden beat 42-31 earlier in the season, is ranked third.
"I like being under the radar going into the state tournament," Cox said.
Despite having a showdown with Granger before next weekend's Mat Classic, Cox thinks his team will have a strong showing if they can start the tournament with a win and build momentum.
"It's going to come down to our first matches," he said. "They all just need to concentrate on that first match and if they can win that first match at regionals it's going to set them up for a better tournament throughout the day."
