NAMPA - "We couldn't hit an outside shot to save our lives," Coeur d'Alene High senior guard Madison Sumner said afterward.

Fortunately, enough of the shots from inside the 3-point line dropped for the Vikings in their state 5A basketball tournament opener against the Hillcrest Knights of Idaho Falls.

Coeur d'Alene used an 9-0 run to start the second half, sparked by a 3-pointer by Sumner - the lone 3-pointer of the game for the Vikings - in a 57-48 victory at the Ford Idaho Center to advance to the semifinals tonight at 5:15 p.m. PST.

"The difference in the game wound up being the start of the third quarter," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "We got up nine (30-21) and they didn't come back from it. Our girls didn't panic and started to make some good shots and got into position inside."

Coeur d'Alene (21-2) will face District 3 champion Mountain View (18-5) of Meridian, which beat Capital of Boise 64-54 in the second game on Thursday at the Idaho Center. It is Coeur d'Alene's ninth straight trip to the semifinals; the Vikings have appeared in the title game seven times in the last eight years.

Coeur d'Alene shot 1 for 17 from beyond the 3-point line, but 18 of 31 on 2-point field goals in the game.

Sumner, who took an elbow to the nose in the Region 1 championship game last week, finished with a season-high 11 points.

"I'm lucky not to have two black eyes," said Sumner, who added the Vikings' outside shooting woes "was kind of a downer for us. But we knew with Brittany (Tackett) and Sydney (Williams) down low, we could get the ball inside and they could make something happen."

And they did.

Tackett finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals, despite sitting with foul trouble through the third and fourth quarter.

"It's so frustrating," Tackett said. "(Coach) Poffenroth gives me so much crap during practice. I'm trying so hard to correct it, but it's hard for me being a senior, because I don't want to be sitting on the bench."

Tackett's third foul came with 6:54 remaining in the third quarter, with a fourth early in the fourth with the Vikings leading 44-37.

"She played well and played a good game," said Poffenroth of Tackett. "She's a real active player and she'll do a lot of things. She was much quicker than anything they had and caused some problems because she's so quick and left-handed."

Lindsay Cook scored 14 points for Hillcrest (20-5), the District 5-6 runner-up, making its first state appearance since 2008, when the Knights were in the 4A classification. The Knights will face Capital (14-10) in a loser-out game today.

"We came out hard and weren't intimidated by them," Hillcrest coach Cody Jackson said. "It's really the first time any of these girls have been on this floor. We came out and played hard and I was very proud of them. We're a young, deep team."

Williams had 14 points and five rebounds - all in second half - for Coeur d'Alene.

Coeur d'Alene finished the game 18 of 27 from the free throw line, including 15 of 21 in the second half.

"I really don't know where all the points came from," Poffenroth said. "We decided to shoot some free throws. They're seniors and they shouldn't panic and just try to play a good game. It's a credit to Hillcrest. They took us out of our game and didn't allow us to run up and down the court."
