RATHDRUM - The community is invited to a showing of the "Finding Kind" documentary film on Monday at Lakeland High School.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the documentary starts at 6 p.m. A suggested donation of $3 will support the Lakeland School District.

The documentary is about bringing positive change to female relationships. The film, recommended for ages 11 and older, covers a range of sensitive topics, including how young women treat each other, bullying, rumors, gossip and exclusion.

The film is part of the nonprofit Kind Campaign started in 2009.

While shooting the film across the country, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Stroud have led assemblies in schools and spoken to people to spread the campaign and collect footage. They have brought their message to more than 30,000 females in more than 300 schools and organizations.

Throughout this month, Lakeland Junior High students have been challenged to follow the daily "Kindness Dare." Improving the school's climate and accepting others have also been discussed.

"We are encouraging students to go out of their way to be kind to others," said teacher Jeni Nelson. "Hopefully, these actions carry over from school, to home, to the community and become habits for our students."

The activities culminate Monday at the school with a Character Campaign Day that includes the film and guest speakers, followed by the documentary open to the public that night.

The female portion of the school day will focus on kindness, while the boys' program covers character building and integrity.

Studies have shown that schools supporting positive emotional and social development see gains in classroom success.
