SPOKANE - Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger scored seven seconds apart - matching a club record - and the Spokane Chiefs went on to rout the lowly Kamloops Blazers 9-4 in Western Hockey League play Sunday night before 4,514 at the Spokane Arena.
The goals were part of six straight Spokane scored to close out the first period with a 6-1 lead. The six goals in the first and nine for the game were both season highs.
Holmberg now has 57 goals, fifth most in a season in team history. He passed Ray Whitney (141) into third place in career goals as a Chief with 142. He also had his 50th assist, giving him 107 points and moving him back into the league scoring lead.
It was Holmberg's second hat trick in as many nights and fifth of the season, one shy of the team record of six, held by Whitney.
It was Zwerger's first career hat trick.
Spokane (36-21-3-3, 78 points), moved within two points of Seattle for fourth place in the Western Conference.
Kamloops is 10th in the 10-team Western Conference.
On Friday, Spokane plays host to Portland, which will come to town on a 20-game win streak.
