SANDPOINT — People come to music from a number of paths. Sometimes, they arrive after being told not to bother coming at all.

That’s the way John Pifer made the trip. After a lifetime of wanting to play music, he managed to overcome the influence of a teacher who not only stifled his creative instincts, but also locked them up tight for decades.

“Should I start with Mrs. Bellamy?” Pifer asked. “She was the one who told me, ‘Don’t sing, John — just hum.’ And I took her at her word.”
