MIDDLETON - Playing an emotional semifinal game late on Friday night, the Priest River Spartans couldn't respond with enough energy to bring back that third-place trophy.
Tory Lane had 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Homedale Trojans past the Priest River Spartans 69-48 on Saturday in the third-place game at the state 3A girls basketball tournament at Middleton High.
Priest River led 12-10 after the first quarter, but was unable to contain Homedale over the final three quarters, getting outscored 59-36.
"I thought the first quarter, we established the inside game with Kaitlyn (Summers) and Jill (Weimer)," Priest River coach Gary Stewart said. "And then the wheels came off in the second quarter and we just didn't get back in transition defense. We didn't do a good job in transition and they shot almost 50 percent (24 of 52) and we had one of our worst shooting games of the year (10 of 44)."
Weimer finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for Priest River, which finishes 16-9 in the team's sixth trip to state in seven years.
"We made a huge improvement over the year," Stewart said. "We were struggling early on and had some big wins against Freeman and Sandpoint (who also advanced to state in 4A). We had a close one against Timberlake in the district tournament, so the girls had that playing-from-behind mentality, but the Filer game (in the semifinals) took it out of us a little bit. We played so well (against Filer) in the first half and kind of let it get away from us. We had to play pretty close to perfect to beat them. It was pretty emotional for us last night, and tough to get anything going today."
Weimer, who plans to attend Oregon State next year but not play basketball, led the Spartans to state all four years. Priest River was trying to bring home its first trophy since winning the consolation title in 2011.
"I think overall it's something to be proud of," Weimer said. "Especially with all the new people we had on this team. We didn't have a lot of varsity returners, so it's really special for that group to have this experience to build on for next year."
Morgan Nash scored 13 points for Homedale (19-6), which advanced to state for the second straight year after a nine-year drought.
"Timberlake really got in our face last night," Homedale coach Joe Betancourt said. "Priest River doesn't play as aggressive as that, and we really executed well today. We got out and ran, and that's our game. When we can get some transition points, we can really score a lot of points that way."
