KELLOGG - A bloody and violent hotel room altercation at the base of Silver Mountain last week allegedly left a Post Falls man with a brain injury that later resulted in his death.

According to court documents unsealed on Wednesday, Brett McCallister, 39, of Port Angeles, Wash., became enraged last Friday night after witnessing his wife kissing Eric Crouse in a hotel room at the Morning Star Lodge. McCallister allegedly shoved Crouse into a wall and punched him in the face.

McCallister is currently facing charges of voluntary manslaughter. He was released from police custody on Monday after posting a bond of $20,000, a Shoshone County Jail officer said.

Following the incident, Crouse, 42, of Post Falls, was airlifted to Kootenai Health in critical condition and taken off life support by his family on Saturday afternoon. Crouse's brother Scott Crouse, 47, who also resides in Port Angeles, contacted police late Friday night and said that Crouse suffered a brain aneurysm.

When Crouse was first transported to Shoshone Medical Center, the Kellogg Police Department reported that his body was "limp and lifeless" in one of the hospital's trauma rooms. He had a lump on the left side of his head, was bleeding near his left ear and couldn't breathe on his own, according to the police report of Kellogg Police Officer John Richter.

Prior to the altercation, which was first reported at 6:11 p.m. on Friday, Frederick Clemens, 49, also of Port Angeles, Wash., told police he had tried convincing Crouse and Sara McCallister to join him at Silver Mountain Resort's nearby water park. But they had refused and were left alone sitting on the couch, Richter's police report said.

When McCallister discovered the two kissing in room 171, he told police he "saw red" and remembers pushing Crouse and hitting his left cheekbone at least once.

McCallister, who is scheduled to appear in the Shoshone County Courthouse on March 13 for a preliminary hearing, said something to the effect of "we're drunk, this isn't worth it" to Crouse after shoving him, according to the police report.

Court documents show that Shana Brittain, 37, also of Port Angeles, discovered Crouse's body laying on the floor of room 107 and started performing CPR on him while two other friends, Michael Skerbeck and Brandy Williams, both of Port Angeles, called 911.

Brittain had been away from the room for about 15 minutes to greet Skerbeck and Williams who had just arrived at the hotel when she found Crouse. McCallister was unaware of how injured Crouse was until after the 911 call was made.

An arrest report from the Kellogg Police Departments describes McCallister and Crouse as acquaintances.
