COEUR d'ALENE - While other people were sipping champagne, shaking noisemakers and dancing their way into 2014, Rachel and Mike Ohlenkamp were in the final stretch of the labor and delivery of their first child.
Joshua Michael Ohlenkamp made his first appearance in the world at 12:28 a.m. at Kootenai Health, and earned the distinction of being the first baby born in Kootenai County in 2014.
"His grandparents are already calling him 'Joshua, the first,'" Rachel said.
Joshua weighed 8.6 pounds.
The Coeur d'Alene couple said they didn't expect their son to be the first baby of the year. Rachel's due date was Dec. 20.
"We really thought he would be a December baby," Rachel said.
Rachel works in the produce section at Super 1 Foods and Mike works at Innercept, a residential program in Coeur d'Alene for struggling teens and young adults.
Rachel said she's happy her first child is a boy, because she and Mike hope to have a second child.
"I loved having a big, protective older brother," she said.
