Winter Trails Day celebrated in the Flathead

The Flathead Community of Resource Educators (CORE), a network of individuals and organizations working together to increase awareness and understanding about the natural, historical and cultural resources of the Flathead Region, will celebrate Winter Trails Day on Saturday, Jan. 11, with several free outdoor activities.

• Ranger-led snowshoe hikes at Glacier National Park will be hosted at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each hike will last about two hours. Reservations are not required, and snowshoes are available to borrow. Meet at the Apgar Visitor Center. For more information, call 888-7939.

• Whitefish Legacy Partners will host a day of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat-tire bike riding and winter fun at Stillwater Mountain Lodge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can ski on the Stillwater Nordic Center’s groomed trails. Demo equipment will available. Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center will lead family-friendly wilderness skill and animal tracking activities. For more information, call 862-3880.

• The Swan Lake Ranger District and Flathead Audubon will co-host a snowshoe walk at the Blacktail Mountain cross-country ski trails from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants may bring snowshoes, or a limited number of children and adult shoes will be available by reservation. Meet at the upper trailhead parking area. Reservations are not required. • Explore Lone Pine State Park on snowshoes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adult and children’s snowshoes are available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. A ranger-led snowshoe walk will take place at 1 p.m. For more information or to reserve snowshoes, call 755-2706.

• The Swan Ecosystem Center will host a family snowshoe event at the Holland Lake Day Use Area, south of Condon, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A limited number of children’s and adult snowshoes will be available by reservation.  For more information or to reserve snowshoes, call 406-754-3137.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
