COEUR d'ALENE - Lake City guard Chuckie Adams was among several blurs of boys basketball players wearing white and navy blue Thursday, in the Lake City Invitational at Lake City High.

Adams was among several Timberwolves who scored on layups throughout the game, as he scored nine of his 11 points in the first half in Lake City's 79-29 rout of Vernon (British Columbia).

Lake City will play at 7 p.m. tonight in the semifinals against South Kitsap, a 4A school from Port Orchard, Wash., which beat Lakeland 59-48 on Thursday.

Kentridge of Kent, Wash., beat Wilsonville (Ore.) 58-52 in overtime on Thursday. At 5:15 p.m. tonight, Kentridge will play Columbia River of Vancouver, Wash., a 54-24 winner over Sandpoint on Thursday.

The winner of Friday's semifinals will play in the title game Saturday at 5 p.m. at Lake City.

In consolation play today, Sandpoint plays Wilsonville at 2 p.m. and Lakeland faces Vernon at 3:30.

Lake City 79, Vernon 29: The Timberwolves are trying to simulate the state 5A boys basketball tournament as best they can at home. They are staying at The Coeur d'Alene Resort for the entire tournament and there are eight teams playing over three days overall.

"Coach is trying to make it a lot like state," Adams said. "We want to get better and prepare for our game Tuesday (at Lake City) against Coeur d'Alene."

Adams was among five players in double figures. Starters Kyle Guice and JJ Winger each scored 12 points, with Winger hitting four 3-pointers. Jacob Dahl scored 12 points coming off the bench. Point guard Justin Pratt scored 10 points and had five assists. Guice also had six rebounds and four blocks - three in the first quarter.

"They weren't getting back on defense," Adams said of Vernon. "We like to get the ball out to Kyle on the outlet pass. We just swung the ball around, which allowed me to get open shots."

Vernon was somewhat of a late addition to the tournament, after Wilson of Tacoma, Wash., bowed out last month.

Lake City coach Jim Winger appreciated the fact Vernon (8-6) showed up to take Wilson's place.

"I really appreciate Vernon helping us out," Winger said. "Wilson bailed on us a little over a month ago, so we were stuck with seven teams. It's impossible to run a seven-team tournament, so we were searching everywhere and they filled in for us."

Lake City shot 32 of 51 from the field, including an impressive 9 of 12 from beyond the 3-point line.

"It's a little different brand of basketball than probably what they have," Winger said. "We got in a lot of good minutes for everybody. We had an advantage in terms of basketball talent and when that's the case, you're up and down pretty quick and that was the case. It'll be different the next couple of nights. There were a couple of (earlier) games that were fantastic."

South Kitsap 58, Lakeland 49: Lakeland played tough against a larger 4A school, but the Hawks (4-4) fell short at the end.

"To compete with a school that has more than 2,500 students at their school, whereas we have a little more than 700, that was a good performance," Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. "Our kids are fighters. That's why we're in this thing. We won a couple of games (in this tournament) last season, so hopefully we do the same thing this season."

The Wolves held Hawks guard Tyrel Derrick to 13 points. On Dec. 20 in a home game against 5A Post Falls, Derrick scored a career-high 33 points. South Kitsap ran a diamond-and-one on Derrick.

"They made a defensive switch toward the end of the game," Stockwell said. "We made some poor choices on the bench (as coaches). We went away from what we do best. But we had some pretty good spurts."

Senior post Derek Bayley scored a team-high 17 points for Lakeland.

"I think it's a good test for our team," Bayley said of playing against schools with a larger enrollment. "You saw how good South Kitsap is out there. We beat them last year in overtime for the consolation championship. We came in with a little bit of confidence, but they took it to us in the first half, kind of took the energy out of us. But we fought back in the second half and kept fighting. It came down to them hitting more shots than us."

Kentridge 58, Wilsonville 52, OT: Jawan Stepney scored 18 points as Kentridge (8-0) topped Wilsonville (5-2).

Zach Reichl, who hit two free throws to send the game into overtime for Wilsonville, led the team with 21 points.

Columbia River 54, Sandpoint 24: Joey Bean paced a balanced attack, scoring 11 points for Columbia River (6-1).

Sandpoint (5-3) was led by Jeremiah Gagnon, who finished with 17 points. The Bulldogs trailed 14-3 after one quarter, 21-5 at halftime and 34-10 after three quarters.
