COEUR d'ALENE - Miscues late in regulation and in overtime ruined what was an otherwise impressive performance by the Lake City High boys basketball team Friday night.
South Kitsap of Port Orchard, Wash., scored the last five points of regulation, then made the key plays late in overtime to upend the Timberwolves 69-67 in the semifinals of the Lake City Invitational at Lake City High.
"I wasn't real pleased with myself, and a couple of plays we called down the stretch," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. "And I wasn't overly impressed with our composure down the stretch. I expected it to be much better than it was, with our experience and upperclassmen out on the floor. I didn't like some of our body language."
"That's why we come to this tournament; these are the games that we need," South Kitsap coach John Callaghan said. "Those guys (the Timberwolves) are tough. That was a great game, man."
South Kitsap (7-1) will play Kentridge (9-0) of Kent, Wash., today at 5 in the championship game. Kentridge defeated
Columbia River of Vancouver, Wash., 40-36 in the other semifinal.
Lake City (6-2) will face Columbia River (6-2) in the third-place game at 3:15.
In consolation games earlier Friday, Lakeland beat Vernon (British Columbia) 61-40 and Wilsonville (Ore.) beat Sandpoint 52-30.
Lakeland (5-4) will play Wilsonville (6-2) for the consolation title today at 1:30 p.m.
Sandpoint (5-4) plays Vernon (8-7) in today's opener at noon.
South Kitsap 69, Lake City 67, OT: Lake City led 60-55 after a free throw by Justin Pratt with 3 minutes, 27 seconds left, but did not score again in regulation. A missed Timberwolf shot led to a fast-break basket by Logan Knowles of South Kitsap with two minutes left, and a Lake City turnover was turned into a 3-pointer by Knowles with 1:42 remaining. Those were his only points of the game.
South Kitsap had a chance to win it in regulation, but Ryley Callaghan's 3-pointer bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
In overtime, South Kitsap took the lead for good with 1 1/2 minutes left. The Wolves missed a shot and Lake City rebounded, but Eric Wattree III stole the ball from the rebounder and scored on a layup to make it 67-65. Caulin Bakalarski, who finished with 25 points, followed with a dunk off an inbounds pass to make it a four-point game with less than a minute remaining. Pratt, who finished with 18 points, scored on the drive with nine seconds remaining. Lake City got the ball back after South Kitsap missed the front end of a one-and-one, but did not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
"We're still kind of searching for someone to take charge of the ship," Winger said. "There were times we just had to take a deep breath and get it under control. I think sometimes, as a group, trying too hard, instead of taking a step back. Sometimes you get into these kinds of games and try to do things too fast, instead of taking a deep breath and executing what we need to do."
South Kitsap tried a 1-3-1 at the start, but Lake City shot the Wolves out of hit by hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter, set up by great ball movement, along with some drive-and-kicks. The T-Wolves hit six 3s in the first half, and finished 7 of 21 from behind the arc.
Kyle Guice connected on 3 of 4 3s and finished with a game-high 25 points for Lake City. He also grabbed nine rebounds.
"Boy, they shot the ball," John Callaghan said. "That (zone defense) didn't last long. But our man defense was OK."
Lake City led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and by 10 at halftime. South Kitsap, using a four-guard lineup and a dribble-drive motion offense, hit six 3-pointers in the second half, 10 in the game - on 29 attempts. Bakalarski made five for the game, four in the first half as he had 14 points at intermission. Callaghan made two 3s and finished with 12 points - 10 in the second half.
South Kitsap led just once, briefly - at 48-47 early in the fourth quarter - prior to overtime.
"We just had to get out on them; pressure them a little harder," said Bakalarski, who added the key to the comeback was, "we played really good defense, and we were getting all the boards."
