COEUR d'ALENE - Despite the fact Lake City was outscored 11-2 in overtime of the third-place game of the Lake City Invitational in a 57-48 loss to visiting Columbia River of Vancouver, Wash., on Saturday, Timberwolves coach Jim Winger saw some silver linings.

Don't get the coach wrong - losing any game is not ideal, especially when his team was outrebounded, 24-10. But there were some things to be learned by the host team.

"We're never thrilled with a loss," Winger said. "In the first 3 1/2 quarters, our defense was as good as it was all season. Down the stretch we had great looks, we didn't finish them off. Today, we couldn't buy a shot, but our execution was better."

Kentridge of Kent, Wash., beat South Kitsap of Port Orchard, Wash., 76-54 in the championship game.

In other tourney games, Lakeland beat Wilsonville (Ore.) 49-40 and Sandpoint downed Vernon (British Columbia) 69-46.

Columbia River 57, Lake City 48: The Timberwolves (6-3) shot 42.5 percent, 17 of 40 from the field. But when it mattered most in overtime, they shot 0 for 6 from the field.

The difference down the stretch was free throws, as the Chieftains (7-2) made 7 of 9 foul shots in overtime and were 14 for 19 from the foul line in the game. They also shot 19 for 35 from the field, including 6 for 11 from beyond the 3-point line.

At the end of regulation, with the score tied at 46, Lake City forward Kyle Guice missed a long shot at the top of the key just inside the 3-point line, over two defenders. Guice's shot was just short, hitting the front of the rim. He finished with 13 points - the only Timberwolf in double figures - and four rebounds.

The go-ahead basket in overtime was quickly scored by Columbia River guard Nathan Hawthorne, on a layup, that gave the Chieftains a 48-46 lead with 3:33 left. Guice was called for a pushing foul, which allowed Andrew Vickers to hit the first of two free throws for a 49-46 lead. Guice was fouled and made both ends of a one-and-one for a 49-48 lead. With 1:50 left in OT, Vickers dribbled the ball off his foot, on defensive pressure by Adams, which set up a potential go-ahead shot for Lake City. But Guice's shot from just within the 3-point line missed short, JJ Winger later missed a 3-pointer with 42.5 seconds left, and Columbia River's Corey Jones converted on a 3-point play with 42.5 seconds left to help ice the game. Lake City then committed a turnover with :34 left.

"We haven't been hitting our shots," said Lake City point guard Justin Pratt, who finished with eight points, five assists and three rebounds. "Those will fall, soon enough. We're not too worried about it. Toward the end (of games), we've got to have more confidence."

With 28 seconds left in regulation, Winger hoisted a 3-pointer that gave Lake City a 46-44 lead and capped a 9-2 Timerwolf run. Earlier in the fourth quarter, with 1:22 left, Guice hit a corner 3 that cut the Chieftains' lead to 44-43. Lake City had leads of 37-31 after the third quarter and 22-18 at halftime.

Jim Winger said next season's third edition of the tournament is set for Dec. 29-31 at Lake City. Teams who have expressed interest include Vallivue of Caldwell and Rocky Mountain of Meridian, North Valley of Reno, Nev., and Shawnee Heights of Tecumseh, Kan., as well as teams from Washington.

"It went great," Winger said. "We have a lot of teams that like it. It was a fun weekend."

Nathan Hawthorne led Columbia River with 16 points, including three 3-pointers.

Lake City hosts Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both teams.
