Woman denies hatchet incident

A Lakeside woman has denied hatchet-wielding allegations against her ripped straight from the pages of Stephen King’s “The Shining.”
Marhya Barnhart, 34, entered a not guilty plea Wednesday in Flathead District Court to a felony charge of assault with a weapon.
A court document alleges that Marhya and her husband, Michael, got into an argument Dec. 22 and she wanted to leave their Lakeside home. Michael reportedly feared she was too drunk to drive and took her keys, locking himself in the bedroom.
At that point, Marhya allegedly picked up an 18-inch hatchet with a four-inch head and struck the door three times — according to an order of protection request filed by Michael — hacking a hole in the door while he held the door shut.
According to a case summary, Michael was able to get the hatchet away from her and hid it under the bed. Marhya allegedly then was talked into leaving by a friend who witnessed the incident.
All three had reportedly been out for drinks at the Spinnaker Bar in Lakeside prior to the incident.
When later located next door, Marhya reportedly told a deputy that she knew her husband was drunk so she left to spend the night with a friend. She allegedly said that angered Michael, who then caused the damage in the house.
Marhya’s friend who witnessed the incident allegedly corroborated Michael’s version of events, although mistaking the hatchet for a hammer.
That witness, however, is facing charges of criminal child endangerment and criminal endangerment in connection to an incident that allegedly involved heavy methamphetamine use.
In his request for a protection order, Michael wrote that the couple have a “hot/cold” relationship and last April Marhya smashed the back window of their truck with a baseball bat.
“Our relationship problems have escalated over the last several months,” he wrote. “I don’t want to get killed or end up hurt by her.”
Marhya filed her own request for an order of protection against her husband. She alleges he punched her in the face at the Somers boat launch on Dec. 13 — giving her a black eye, sore nose and sore cheek — an incident she said brought a law enforcement response.
She also alleged he punched her in front of his daughter last summer and that he had also choked out and punched her in her face in October 2013, causing her to lose consciousness, this time in front of her son.
Marhya wrote that she is falsely charged over the hatchet incident and it was her husband who damaged the door.
“I have tape recordings of him yelling at my son wanting to fight him, also yelling at me and threatening me,” she wrote.
Protection orders requested by both people were granted on Wednesday.
Marhya is currently released after posting a $5,000 bond, which was reduced from $30,000. Her next hearing is set for March 5.
