Citizens say goodbye to Larkin

POST FALLS - Clay Larkin's recently-purchased pontoon boat will be outfitted well.
Post Falls' popular mayor for the past 13 years now plans to spend more time on a passion that has been docked during his service: fishing.
And some of the 250 people who packed into the Post Falls Senior Center on Thursday night for Larkin's retirement party made sure he'll be well-prepared to enjoy that pastime with fishing equipment.
"The gifts are wonderful, but what's really special is having all you here tonight," Larkin said, fighting back tears. "My friends, thank you."
With his wife, Deanna, by his side, the 77-year-old Larkin drew multiple standing ovations and praise from Post Falls youth. Larkin was also praised by Sen. Mike Crapo to President Barack Obama on the U.S. Senate floor.
Larkin, who spent five years on the city council before becoming mayor, handed the gavel off Tuesday to former city council member Ron Jacobson, who Larkin endorsed during November's election.
Shelly Enderud, Post Falls' city administrator, called Larkin a "mentor" to her and many city employees.
"You've encouraged us to be creative and innovative," she said. "You've not only been our mayor, but our friend."
A strong advocate for economic development, government transparency, honoring youth and protecting the environment, businesses, students and others thanked Larkin for his dedication to serving the municipality and the community.
"I've learned that it's not just fun and games to be mayor," one elementary student wrote about what they learned from Larkin.
Another wrote: "You inspired me to pursue my dreams."
Post Falls' city hall, police station and library were built during Larkin's leadership. He was at the forefront of recruiting numerous businesses to Post Falls.
Bob Templin, a Post Falls city center property owner and fellow veteran, said Larkin has been a big part of making Post Falls a "humble" city.
"Thank you for the foresight, perseverance and leadership for the growth and development of Post Falls, Idaho's River City," Templin said. "Your fingerprints are all over and they won't be removed for some time."
Larkin said his name may be on many awards, but they really aren't about him.
"They belong to you because you are the city," he said. "I'm the luckiest guy in the world to have had this position, do some things and be proud of it."
