Man dies in Marion shooting

One man was left dead and another in jail after an early Sunday morning altercation ended in a shooting outside a Marion home.
Mark Ames is being held in the Flathead County Detention Center on suspicion of deliberate homicide after the incident.
Flathead County Undersheriff Dave Leib said the shooting took place about 1:45 a.m. outside a duplex owned by one of the men. Ames’ wife rented one of the apartments and the victim lived in the other one.
He declined to release the victim’s name until family could be notified, but did say the men knew each other.
“The two had restraining orders out against each other,” Leib said. “They had a history with one another.”
He said there was an altercation outside the duplex, and the victim went inside. Ames allegedly fired “multiple rounds” from an AK-47 rifle into the victim’s house, Leib said. The victim came out with a pistol and Ames allegedly fired several shots with a pistol of his own, fatally wounding the victim.
Leib declined to speculate on the nature of the altercation.
The victim was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
