SUNNYSIDE - Moses Lake wrestling continues to best the top teams in the state.

The latest victim, top-ranked 3A Sunnyside Grizzles.

The Chiefs were able to travel to Sunnyside and walk away with a convincing 42-28 win behind strong performances from junior Trey Long, amongst others.

"We wrestled extremely well," head coach Jaime Garza said. "Some of the best that we've had all year came out this evening. So, with that being said, we were just proud of each kid and they capitalized on what we've been teaching them so that's what I really enjoyed."

In the last two weeks Garza and the Chiefs have defeated Lake Stevens, the defending 4A state champion and No. 1 ranked team, and Sunnyside, the No. 1 ranked team for 3A. Both times coming on the road.

"The disparity isn't very large by any means," Garza said. "They (Sunnyside) were a tough school. To go out there and just knock off the number one team two weeks ago or three weeks ago and come back and do it to the 3A team... We beat them handily, it was a solid win by us."

Long won a tough match in overtime after rallying from a 7-2 deficit. Sophomore Hudson Mauseth secured a second round pin to begin a series of five straight Moses Lake wins, which included pins by senior Jordan Lacelle, junior Justin Sainsbury and sophomore Dylan Morris.

Next up for the Chiefs is the WSWF tournament at Olympia High School on Saturday.

Garza is encouraged by how the team's technique and mental makeup has improved throughout the course of the season.

"The improvement is evident," he said. "It's starting to form, it's starting to take shape the stuff that we're working on and that what we talk about. The will to win and having that desire to go out there and compete against anyone and having confidence, that's what's starting to manifest"
