Nearly 2.2 million visit Glacier in 2013

Glacier National Park recorded its fourth-busiest year on record in 2013 with 2,190,375 people entering the park.
That amounted to a 1.3 percent increase over the 2012 count of 2,162,034 visitors, according to year-end numbers published by the National Park Service statistics office.
The increased visitation came about despite a partial government shutdown that closed Glacier Park for two weeks in October, typically one of the slower months of the year.
The park closed out the year with December visitation of 10,482 people, a 6.3 percent increase over the same month in 2012.
One striking part of the year-end statistics is that the number of visitors was down from 2012 at every park entrance except West Glacier — the busiest entrance— and Two Medicine.
The West Glacier entrance recorded a 5.2 percent increase, but with just over 1 million people entering there, that was enough to push the overall park visitation count past the 2012 number.
Overnight stays in the park were up in every category except group camping, for a total increase of 2.3 percent over 2012.
A total of 379,312 people camped or stayed in a hotel or motel inside Glacier in 2013, compared to 370,924 in 2013.
Backcountry use was up 9.4 percent at 29,132, compared to 26,634 in 2012.
Lodges and motels in Glacier tallied 127,031 overnight guests in 2013 compared to 126,055 in 2012.
