Bulldogs wrestle tough at Ted Kato

THOMPSON FALLS — Mission-Charlo’s wrestling team stayed hot for a second weekend in a row, this time posting a third place finish at the Ted Kato Invitational in Thompson Falls on Saturday.

“It was a pretty exciting weekend,” Lyle Cronk, the Bulldogs coach said. “We had some good performances.”

Those included a 170-pound championship from Jacen Petersen and a 126-pound title from Jamie Mullins. The Bulldogs also received second-place showings from sophomore heavyweight Tyler Spidel and senior 113-pounder Morgan Schultz.

Arlee’s T.J. Knoll won the 106-pound weight class, and Alex Bertollt took second at 160 pounds. The Warriors finished ninth of the 13 teams in the tournament.

The best bout of the day, Cronk said, was a rematch of the 2013 state championship battle between Schultz and Anthony Parkin of Superior. Parkin, who won last year’s state title, took the 11-5 decision, but Cronk said the friendly rivalry the two have is the best practice Schultz can get.

“Having brought it all the way to the state championship last year makes it even more of a competition,” said Cronk.

Mission-Charlo wrestlers Kyle Couture and Ethan Goss placed third in the 160 and 220-pound weight classes, respectively, to help the Bulldogs to a third-place finish despite missing the injured Steven Bravo and Trent Dennison.

That showing followed up a strong dual victory over Ronan on Tuesday to finish off a week Cronk couldn’t help but be proud about.

“We wrestled pretty good,” Cronk said.
