Donald Curtis Siers passed away Jan. 14, 2014, at the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls, at 92, after a lengthy battle against cancer. He was surrounded by family.

Don was born May 1, 1921, on a farm in Wadena County, Minn., to Harry and Anna Reece Siers. He was the oldest of five brothers and five sisters.

He was drafted into World War II in 1942 and served under Gen. Patton, earning five bronze stars from five major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. Don was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service before he was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Dec. 15, 1952, Don married Joyce Newland in Olyen, Minn., and they celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2013.

Don worked in the logging industry nearly all his working life, most of the time as a sawyer. This work eventually took him to Dixon where he and Joyce lived for 35 years. They made many civic contributions in Dixon, particularly enjoying their work with the senior center.

Don was an expert pinochle player and loved to tell a joke. He always had one or two handy.

Besides his wife Joyce, Don is survived by his four daughters, Beverly Siers, Sheila Quimby and Bucky, Mary Rackham and Bill, and Janet Schwegel and Greg; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. As well, four sisters, Pearl, Norma, Evelyn and Ruth, and two brothers, Wayne and Dale, all of Minnesota, survive him.

One sister, Fern; three brothers, Willis, Harry and Ross; and one grandson, Teddy, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls. Visitation will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will take place at the Montana Veterans Home Cemetery, with full military honors. A luncheon will follow at the First Baptist Church of Columbia Falls, 827 9th Street West, Hwy. 2, Columbia Falls.
