MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake boys basketball drew closer to the top of the Columbia Basin Big 9 with wins over Eastmont and Davis over the weekend.

With the back-to-back wins, the Chiefs move into a tie for second place in the league at 5-3.

"I think everybody in this league is just evenly matched," head coach John Hohman said. "From top to bottom I don't think the league has been closer, this competitive ever since I've been here."

Friday night at home Moses Lake jumped out to an early 20-10 over the Wildcats, but like the previous meeting, the game wasn't decided until the final buzzer.

After trailing 41-43 entering the final period, the Chiefs put together strong defense and outscored the Wildcats 13-9 en route to a 54-52 win.

Sophomore center Caesar Sandoval attacked early with nine first quarter points and finished with a game-high 13. Fellow sophomore, guard Ricardo Gonzalez, added 12 points and junior forward Tyson Karstetter recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.

With four teams with five league wins each, every win is precious.

"It's going to go down to the end," Hohman said. "I think that whoever protects their home court and obviously you have to win on the road now... That's good though, the cream rises."

It looked as if Moses Lake would suffer a letdown against Davis after falling behind 2-23 to start the game. However, the Chiefs outscored Davis 49-17 in the second half to complete a 38 point swing and left Yakima with a 66-49 win.

"I think we're just growing closer and closer as a team," Hohman said.

Junior forward Mitch Hohman scored a team-high 15 points while Sandoval added 13.

Seniors Josh Hirz and Nick Sutherland combined for 22.
