POST FALLS - A high-speed pursuit that started on Interstate 90 in Post Falls Tuesday night led to the arrest of three stolen-vehicle suspects in Spokane Valley.

Mickey H. Santos, 28, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for felony possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude and a felony warrant.

Melissa A. Buchheit, 27, and Heidi S. Elliott, 30, were both booked for felony possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor possession of motor vehicle theft tools.

All three suspects are from Spokane.

"We picked up the stolen vehicle eastbound on our (license plate identification system for stolen vehicles) in Interstate 90," Post Falls police Capt. Greg McLean said. "The vehicle turned around at the Highway 41 exit and headed back toward Spokane."

Spokane Valley Sheriff's deputies assisted in the chase around 9 p.m. when it entered Spokane County.

The suspect vehicle exited the freeway at the Sullivan exit, traveled southbound to Broadway and turned westbound to Collins. Santos turned south to Olive Avenue and turned east toward Vercler. The vehicle stopped in the area of Olive and Vercler, where the suspects bailed out of the vehicle and ran on foot.

A containment perimeter was set up by police. A Spokane Valley deputy and his K9 began tracking the suspects. The tracking led to the 600 block of North Virginia, where Santos and Buchheit were found trying to hide in the bed of a pickup. They were arrested without incident.

Soon after, a Spokane Valley taxi driver approached the deputies and said he had just received a call requesting a ride, according to police reports. The ride was for a female who was acting odd and was in a hurry to be picked up at a business in the 12500 block of East Sprague, a few blocks away from where the pursuit ended.

"The taxi driver explained he was listening to the incident on a scanner and suspected the female (Elliott) might be the one who hadn't been located yet," a Spokane County press release states. "Deputies stayed in contact with the taxi driver as he arrived at the business and picked up the female."

During the search of the stolen vehicle, several shaved keys were located. Elliott's cell phone, which deputies learned was used to make an alleged fake 911 call during the pursuit as a distraction, was also located inside the vehicle. During the fake call, a female allegedly told dispatchers there had been a shooting at the Cabela's in Post Falls.
