POST FALLS - A boyfriend-girlfriend duo is accused of multiple model home thefts in the region, staying at a hotel without paying for the rooms and shoplifting.

Post Falls Police on Tuesday identified the suspects as Shawn A. Fortune, 29, and Jessica C. Olson, 33. Police don't have an address for the two. Their last known residence was in Coeur d'Alene.

"Multiple charges are forthcoming," Post Falls Police Capt. Greg McLean said. "Merchants and hotels should be aware of these two."

McLean said the two are suspects in Post Falls theft-related crimes dating back to early December.

On Dec. 2, it was reported by a real estate agent that a model home of Hallmark Homes at 4683 E. Kit Fox Lane had been broken into.

"The house was cleared," McLean said, adding that stolen items included a bedroom set, couch, end tables, kitchen set, bar stools, lamps and real estate office items.

"They even tried to get the refrigerator out the door, but the refrigerator was too large."

An estimated $10,000 worth of property was stolen. Detectives say it's unclear how the suspects entered the home.

Detective Mark Goodwin said a Hallmark employee recognized some of the stolen items listed for sale on Craigslist. He said the items were posted by Fortune.

In another case, an employee at Super 1 Foods in Post Falls identified Fortune and Olson as shoplifting suspects for allegedly stealing $77 worth of items on Jan. 6.

"They loaded the car and left before it could definitely be determined that a theft had occurred," McLean said.

When police learned that Fortune was supposed to meet someone at a storage unit on Jan. 8, they showed up as well and questioned Fortune about the furniture.

"He allowed us to look in the storage unit and we recognized a lot of the items were from the Hallmark home," McLean said.

McLean said Fortune told detectives that he had purchased the items from an unknown party.

McLean said Fortune was not arrested at that time because of the possibility that Fortune could lead police to other suspects and some of the stolen items weren't at the storage unit.

"Throughout the course of the investigation, we've learned there's more (alleged) involvement," McLean said.

Police were called to Red Lion Templin's Hotel on Jan. 14 for a report of unwanted people.

"Two master key cards were missing from the maid staff and it was discovered that people had been staying in different rooms," McLean said.

Goodwin said the rooms had been used from Jan. 6 through Jan. 14. The total cost for the rooms and services for those nights is $2,800.

Goodwin said hotel security identified Fortune and Olson as the suspects.

McLean said the two are being investigated for other model home thefts in the region.

Fortune has been booked into the local jail 10 times in the past 10 years, on charges including possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and probation violation.

Olson has been booked into the jail nine times in the past eight years, on charges including theft, battery, robbery and driving with an invalid driver's license.

Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Christie Wood said suspects have been identified in Coeur d'Alene model home theft cases, and warrants for their arrest have been requested from the Kootenai County Prosecutor's Office.

"I have not confirmed names because they have yet to be charged with a crime," Wood said on Tuesday. "We also believe they are responsible for some theft at local motels."

About $3,000 worth of furniture, decor and real estate agent items were also stolen from a model home in Coeur d'Alene early this month.

Investigations continue.
