RATHDRUM - With 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lakeland High cheering section began yelling "4A power."
On Tuesday night, there wasn't much doubt about that on the basketball court.
Junior point guard Tyrel Derrick scored 24 points for the 4A Hawks, who defeated the 5A Coeur d'Alene Vikings 76-63 in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.
Lakeland hit eight 3-pointers in the game and outscored the Vikings, ranked No. 3 in this week's state media poll, 55-41 after the first quarter using a fast-moving motion offense.
"The kids are starting to realize what they have and what they can get in the offense," Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said.
"It's a little different than anything anyone else plays, but it works for us because of our size," Stockwell added. "We're fairly quick, but do move the ball really well. If we can do that and get some shots to fall, we're pretty good."
Derek Bayley scored 17 points and Jake Ram added 16 for Lakeland (9-5), which travels to 5A Lake City on Friday.
"When we play at Lake City, we'll have played the same amount of games at Lake City (four) than we've played in our home gym," Stockwell said. "So in some ways, I think that's good because we just go to whatever gym we're supposed to and just play. I don't think it's hurt us at all and we'll get to finish at home."
After Friday, Lakeland will host four of its final five games, including 4A Inland Empire League games against Moscow next Tuesday and Sandpoint on Feb. 14.
"I think the biggest thing from tonight was getting over the mental portion of it," Stockwell said. "We're the smallest school in the IEL and to play a big dog like Coeur d'Alene and get a win - it doesn't happen all the time. So if we can translate that into a little more confidence, the better we'll play. This is the perfect time for us to do it."
Derrick scored 13 points of his 24 points in the fourth quarter.
"Our guys played hard defensively and that's what we've been working on at practice," Derrick said. "Getting the 50/50 balls is huge for us. Just getting over the hump and beating them was big for us. It really sets a precedence for our season and finally getting over that team."
Devin Kluss scored 16 points for Coeur d'Alene (11-3), which travels to Moscow on Saturday.
"The first quarter is the pace that we like to play at," said Coeur d'Alene coach Kurt Lundblad, whose team held a 22-21 lead after the first quarter. "We like to pick up the pace a little bit and get a few more possessions. Lakeland played really well, shot really well and we didn't have an answer for the Derrick kid. We've been a little dysfunctional the last week or so, so we've got to fix some things and get back on track. Hats off to Lakeland, they were super tonight. I thought they played a great game. Even though it was a fast-pace, but they knew when to slow it down and made some shots. They were just better than us tonight."
One of the Vikings' starters, guard Ryan Walde, quit the team last week, Lundblad said.
"He's no longer with us," Lundblad said. "He's decided to do other things."
Saturday's game is the final regular season road game for Coeur d'Alene, which has four home games remaining.
"This is the best thing that could have happened to us," Lundblad said after a lengthy team meeting following the game. "We've been playing well and getting some wins. We didn't play well in the Fish game. Maybe it's a wakeup call to all of us and that we need to get better in some areas and play better - no matter who they put in front of us."
