* GIRLS BASKETBALL

COEUR d'ALENE - Sydney Williams scored 22 points, Sara Chalich 15 to lead the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, ranked No. 2 in 5A, past the Post Falls Trojans 58-28 on senior night in the 5A Inland Empire League finale for both schools Thursday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

"We just played pretty good defense," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "If you're having an off night, you can succeed with defense and the girls are learning that."

The win clinches at least a tie for the 5A IEL title for Coeur d'Alene (17-2, 5-1), which can lock up the No. 1 seed to the Region 1 tournament with a win Saturday at Moscow. A new 5A IEL tiebreaker stipulates that head-to-head ties are broken by point differential in the two league games between the two teams, provided those teams had the same record vs. 4A teams. Lewiston (17-2, 4-1) beat Coeur d'Alene by 3 points at Coeur d'Alene, and Coeur d'Alene won by 20 points at Lewiston.

But should Coeur d'Alene lose, and Lewiston beats Lake City on Saturday, the Bengals would be the No. 1 seed to regionals.

Madison Sumner had 10 points and three assists for Coeur d'Alene, and Brittany Tackett had 10 rebounds and six points.

Kim Reynolds scored seven points for Post Falls (10-10, 0-6), which returns to action next Friday at the 5A Region 1 tournament, opening at the No. 1 seed.
