COEUR D A'LENE - Royal High School wrestling took a big leap of seriousness on June 21-24 when 16 Knights participated in the North Idaho College Wrestling Camp.
The Knights must have learned something. They posted a 9-2 record in team duals to finish second among 12 teams. One of their victims was duals champ Polson, Mont., which went 10-1.
"I would like to say thanks to all the community that attended our yard sale to fund this camp," coach Randy Miller said. "Parents also need a pat on the back for supporting their kids' attendance.
Junior Darrin Miller was not scored on and was undefeated (13-0) in dual matches, and he was a take-down finalist. Junior Kiki Chabolla was undefeated in dual matches (13-0) and a take-down finalist
Carlos Hernandez lost only one dual match (12-1) and finished third in the take-down tournament. Edwardo Rodriguez lost only two dual matches (11-2). He defeated an Oregon state champion and was a take-down finalist.
"This kid will be a welcome addition to the 106-pound class this next season. We had to forfeit 106 all last year in dual competitions," coach Randy Miller said.
Matt Bartlett had only two dual match losses during camp. Varsity team members Steven Toro (10-3), Elias Cardenas (7-5), and Hunter Follett (7-5) also showed some real growth in hard fought battles to post winning records.
"I saw some real growth as the camp progressed over the three days," Miller said. "Everyone had some great matches, and they proved that this next year's team can be a contender for a state trophy."
Although they did not post winning marks, 2013-14 junior varsity wrestlers Randy Dunn, Able Dominguez and Regan Callahan stepped up when needed to get a dual win.
"They made the difference in our team finish," Miller said.
If the individuals stay true to team core values, next season could really be exciting, Miller said.
